Press release “Riots in Seine-Saint-Denis”, November 3rd 2005

Before the Government announces one more emergency programme, or one more version of a prevention law, it is absolutely essential to draw lessons from these riots, concerning failings of urban policies as well as of the organisation of public services.

Mayors are on the front line in the implementation of these policies. When those are failing, Mayors directly suffer the consequences and are responsible for it in the view of the citizens.

The Mayors members of the French Forum for Urban Safety ask the Prime Minister to immediately create a Commission of Mayors, in order to find a politic consensus on the necessary reforms to leadFrance’s suburbs out of their current state of abandon.

Jean-Pierre BALDUYCK

Mayor of Tourcoing

President of the French Forum for Urban Safety
