Liege (BE) is elected as the president of Efus and Amiens (FR) as the new vice-president

Willy Demeyer-2Gathering for their General Assembly Meeting in Rimini (Italy) on 18 May, Efus members have chosen the Municipality of Liege, represented by its Mayor Willy Demeyer, as President of Efus.

The Municipality of Liege leads various initiatives aimed at developing local security policies based on strengthening social cohesion and outreach work. A member of Efus since 1995, it has contributed to work in the fields of the fight against drug addiction, the supervision of supporters during sporting events, nightlife management and, most recently, the prevention of violent radicalisation.  

After his election, Willy Demeyer said that: “The role of cities will be even more crucial in the years to come. They must be the place for social cohesion based on prevention.”

Willy Demeyer succeeds Erich Marks, who served as interim President following the death of Guilherme Pinto (elected in 2010) in January 2017.

Vice Presidency and Executive Committee

The City of Amiens (France) was elected as Vice President, a position it shares with the City of Rotterdam (Netherlands), the Crime Prevention Council of Lower Saxony (Germany) and the Government of Catalonia (Spain).

Four local and regional authorities were elected new members of the Executive Committee: Lormont (France), Castellón, Malaga (Spain) and the Umbria Region (Italy).

International Conference 2017

Efus’ next major meeting will be held on 15-17 November 2017 in Barcelona, for its sixth international, interdisciplinary conference entitled Security, Democracy and Cities: Coproducing Urban Security Policies”. Unique in its field, this event is aimed at all security and urban-life actors. Some 800 participants from Europe and beyond are expected to attend in order to exchange knowledge, experience and practices. This event will mark the network’s 30th anniversary.
