Madrid, Spain, June 2017 – The EU-funded “PRACTICIES – Partnership Against Violent Radicalisation in the Cities” project, in which Efus is a partner, has commenced with a first coordination meeting held in Madrid (Spain) on 1-2 June.
The project mobilises networks of European cities and experts from the fields of humanities, political sciences and information sciences with the aim of better understanding the “human roots of radicalisation”, characterising these processes and their origins and building concrete tools and prevention practices.
The PRACTICIES network includes:
- national, regional and municipal institutions in charge of designing and implementing policies aimed at preventing violent radicalisation;
- academics, researchers and experts responsible for developing comprehensive and multidisciplinary approaches to tackle violent radicalisation;
- civil society representatives, practitioners, representatives of local authorities, schools, families and associations contributing to innovative and ethical solutions to counter violent actions;
- IT companies specialised in the development of software that will enable both the collection of data and the production of control and narrative tools to prevent all forms of radicalisation leading to violence.
The project will assess the risks and protection factors as well as the discourses and propagation modes of radical ideas/actions among young people in European cities. It will evaluate the current practices, programmes and policies to tackle radicalisation, decrease community tensions and increase social cohesion, and identify good intervention practices and assess the possibility of using them in cities across Europe.
Efus’ role as a partner and work package leader is to coordinate a working group of cities tasked with identifying the needs and expectations of local authorities and share these with researchers in order to develop a research adapted to the real needs of local authorities regarding the prevention of radicalisation. Efus will also support selected pilot local authorities and promote the exchange of practices and knowledge between local authorities in cooperation with European experts. Moreover, Efus will contribute to the dissemination of the project’s results.

PRACTICIES is financed by the European Commission Horizon 2020 framework programme for research and innovation and runs from May 2017 to April 2020.
