Karlsruhe is the second-largest city in the state of Baden-Württemberg, in southwest Germany, near the Franco-German border. It has a population of 296,000. Karlsruhe was founded in 1715 as a seat of government. The city is now the seat of the two highest courts in Germany: the Federal Constitutional Court and the Federal Court of Justice. Karlsruhe is also home to nine universities and research institutions and one of Europe’s centres for information and communication technology.
