Paris, September 2018 – Efus will submit on 11 October to the European Commission a project on the local prevention of online hate speech, and is looking for member authorities that are interested in taking part. The deadline for receiving applications is 28 September.
As part of the European Commission’s Rights, Equality and Citizenship programme, the project seeks to effectively counter online hate speech, given that social networks have proved to be particularly effective channels for the spread of racist, xenophobic and intolerant contents.
Although European institutions and national states have begun to put in place measures to control and curb such online speech, local authorities are also concerned and their actions can have a real impact both on local communities who are victim of such narratives and on those who are at risk of embracing them.
Efus’ project will notably seek to establish a state-of-the-art of local online hate speech, to produce methodological recommendations for local authorities, to assess local needs, and to design local communication campaigns.
