La Rochelle is a city in the southwest of France, prefecture of the Charente-Maritime county (French département) located in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. La Rochelle is the largest municipality of the department in terms of population with more than 70,000 inhabitants, in front of Saintes, Rochefort, and Royan. Its inhabitants are called the Rochelais and the Rochelaises.
