Radicalisation: Final conference of the PRACTICIES project

25,26 March 2020, Riga (Latvia)

co-organised by Efus, Université de Toulouse Jean Jaurès and the City of Riga

A particularly sensitive issue, the fight against all forms of extremism and radicalisation requires the participation of all citizens and professionals in Europe, including those involved in the fields of knowledge, research and technology.

The PRACTICIES (Partnership Against Violent Radicalisation in Cities) project was created on this basis and in response to a European call for tenders, supported by the French government, following the terrorist attacks in the Paris region in January 2015. Coordinated by the University of Toulouse II – Le Mirail, it involves more than 25 partners from various European countries (Italy, Austria, Spain, Belgium, Greece, Portugal) as well as Tunisia, all experts in humanities, political science, information sciences or information technology.

Running from May 2017, the project has organised a range of activities aiming to better understand the risk factors and the mechanisms of violent radicalisation and to characterise them from the origins to the the violent act. It has conducted in-depth, cutting edge qualitative and quantitative studies into risk factors for and trajectories of radicalisation processes, and developed a wide range of prevention tools, including civic education methodologies, media education trainings, a serious game and content detection software.

The final conference will present the project results, seek an intense exchange with leading experts, and disseminate the project results to the European and international PVE (Prevention of violent extremism) community.

Words of welcome

Seraphin Alava, Prof. Université de Toulouse II – Le Mirail, project leader – PRACTICIES
“3 years of implementing the PRACTICIES project have meant deep research into the human drivers of radicalisation processes and their tipping points as well as the development and testing of a broad range of concrete prevention tools with and for cities across Europe. We have deepened our understanding of violent extremism and reinforced our common capacities to act against hate and extremist violence. Join us in Riga to learn about our results and become part of our future activities and initiatives!”

Olegs Burov, Mayor of Riga
“It is of key importance for urban security to tackle radicalisation and violent extremism in a preventative fashion and in a broad and strong multidisciplinary network of actors including law-enforcement agencies, municipal administrations, the education system and research. The PRACTICIES project has forged such a network, which is why Riga has supported it from the start and contributed actively to the working group of cities coordinated by Efus. It is a pleasure to welcome the participants of the final conference here in our city!”

> Elizabeth Johnston, Efus Executive Director
“Over the last 5 years, local and regional authorities have assumed a key role in preventing radicalisation and violent extremism across Europe. Projects such as PRACTICIES have made an important contribution to reinforcing the links between mayors, local security practitioners, European institutions, researchers, enterprises and educators. Organising the final conference in conjunction with Efus’ General Assembly provides an important opportunity to broaden this mobilisation and bring on board further cities and regions from our European network.”
